Adult Autism and ADHD Assessments

Wondering whether autism or ADHD might explain lifelong patterns?

Many adults begin exploring assessment after years of feeling different, overwhelmed, or misunderstood.

You might recognise experiences such as:

  • Social situations feeling confusing, draining or difficult to navigate

  • Struggling with focus, organisation, or completing everyday tasks despite strong abilities in other areas

  • Masking or pushing through situations that leave you exhausted afterward

  • Feeling capable in some areas of life while quietly struggling in others

  • Wondering why things that seem easy for others often feel harder for you

For some people, these patterns have been present since childhood. Others begin recognising them later in life.

A structured psychological assessment can help clarify whether these experiences may be related to autism, ADHD, or both.

Why People Seek an Assessment

An autism or ADHD assessment can help you:

  • Understand longstanding patterns in how you think, feel, and interact

  • Identify strengths as well as areas of difficulty

  • Reduce self-blame around challenges that have persisted for years

  • Guide therapy, workplace adjustments, or study supports

  • Make informed decisions about next steps

Assessments at Tara Psychology

Tara Psychology provides evidence-based assessments for autism, ADHD, or both. Each assessment is tailored to your individual experiences, exploring social communication, attention, sensory processing, and emotional regulation.

Our neuroaffirming approach explores differences rather than deficits, with a special focus on adults who may have been overlooked in earlier assessments or who have spent years masking their traits.

Assessments are conducted with respect and support, so you feel understood throughout the process.

The Assessment Process

Assessments use evidence-based, neuroaffirming tools and are available online. The process typically includes:

1

Initial consultation

An exploration of autism or ADHD-related traits, developmental history, and assessment goals.

2

Clinical interview

A detailed interview using neuroaffirming tools, including the MIGDAS or DIVA-5.

3

Standardised measures

Evidence-based questionnaires assessing autism, ADHD, and relevant traits. Additional measures may be included where clinically indicated.

4

Informant information

Where possible, input from someone who knows you well (such as a family member or friend) may be included to provide additional perspective.

5

Feedback and report

You receive feedback on the outcome of the assessment and a written report depending on the report option selected.

Online assessments available anywhere in Australia

Complete the process privately and comfortably from home, with clear guidance every step.

Have questions about fees or how assessments work?

Your Assessment Outcome

Assessments include documentation designed to provide clarity, highlight strengths, and offer practical guidance. Choose the format that best fits your needs.

Outcome Letter

A concise letter confirming assessment findings, suitable for personal insight. It can support therapy planning or help you understand areas of difficulty in the workplace or study. You can opt for a Standard or Comprehensive report if more detailed documentation is needed.

Standard Report

A clear report summarising findings, strengths, challenges, and practical recommendations. Suitable for personal insight, therapy planning, and some workplace or educational accommodations.

Comprehensive Report

A detailed report including assessment methods, findings, functional capacity information, and recommendations. Ideal for funding applications (e.g., NDIS, Centrelink), or complex workplace or educational adjustments.

Assessment fees vary depending on the type of assessment and report.

See Fees and Rebates for details.

Is Assessment the Right Step?

You can begin by booking an initial consultation, which is the first step in the assessment process. This first session can be booked on its own with no obligation to proceed with a full assessment.

Pre-assessment questionnaires and an intake form are provided beforehand, allowing the session to focus on exploring autistic or ADHD traits, your developmental history, and what you hope to gain from assessment.

The consultation helps you:

  • Make an informed decision about whether to proceed with a full assessment

  • Understand which assessment approach would be most helpful

  • Clarify your goals, including the type of report or outcome that suits your needs

  • Know what to expect from the full assessment process

The fee is credited toward a full assessment if you decide to proceed.

Additional Considerations

If you're exploring medication for ADHD or require documentation for NDIS, further information is available in the FAQs on the Fees and Rebates page.
